Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Also referred to as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that improves the health and look of your skin by stimulating the production of collagen, which is the protein in your skin that provides its youthful strength and resiliency.

The cosmetic treatment works by creating microtears in the very top layer of your skin to mimic an injury. Your body responds by sending over the healing cells to repair the “injury.”

Southeastern Institute for Restorative Medicine offers microneedling to treat many common beauty concerns, including:

  • Acne
  • Pigmentation
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Scars
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin tone

Microneedling may also be used to treat stretch marks.

For an even more dramatic effect, Dr. Thompson offers the Vampire Facial®, which combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is a blood product that contains a high concentration of platelets, growth factors, and specialized proteins that accelerate your skin’s healing process.

What can I expect during microneedling?

During microneedling at the Southeastern Institute for Restorative Medicine, to reduce any discomfort, your aesthetics expert may apply a numbing cream to your skin before they start your microneedling.

Once the numbing agent has taken effect and your skin cleansed with an antibacterial agent, your practitioner begins microneedling, placing tiny pin-pricks evenly across your skin with the special microneedling tool to get the desired results. The entire microneedling process may take about 30 minutes.

After microneedling, your provider may apply a special serum to soothe your skin. Your skin may be red for a few days following treatment, but this is to be expected and indicates that the healing process has begun.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

You should start to notice an improvement in the look of your skin within a couple of weeks after microneedling. However, to get the best results, you may need a series of treatments. Southeastern Institute for Restorative Medicine designs your treatment plan before you get started, so you know what to expect.
