Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic neurotoxin treatment that temporarily corrects certain facial wrinkles, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.

Dr. Thompson offers three of the leading brands of neurotoxin at Southeastern Institute for Restorative Medicine: Botox, Dysport®, and Xeomin®.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily relaxing muscle movement under your skin. When you make a facial expression, the muscles under your skin cause your skin to fold. Over time, repeated movements create noticeable lines and wrinkles.

By relaxing the muscles under your skin and halting movement, Botox allows the skin to relax and smooth out, diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Thompson is an expert in cosmetic injections and knows precisely where to place the injections to get you the natural look you want without appearing overdone or plastic.

What can I expect during Botox injections?

Botox is a quick and relatively painless cosmetic treatment. During your session at Southeastern Institute for Restorative Medicine, Dr. Thompson expertly and carefully injects the medication into specific muscles under your skin. Treatment time ranges from 10 to 20 minutes.

You may feel a slight pinch during the injection, but the needle Dr. Thompson uses is very small, and pain should be minimal. The number of injections you need depends on the treatment area.

After Botox injections, you may notice some redness at the site of treatment, but these side effects should disappear quickly. You can apply makeup to cover up any of the redness.

There’s no downtime following Botox injections. However, Dr. Thompson recommends you not engage in any activity that increases your heart rate, including working out or heavy lifting, for at least two hours following your treatment.

You may notice an improvement in your look within 24 hours after your injections.

How long do Botox results last?

Your Botox injections should keep your skin looking smooth and youthful for up to four months. Dr. Thompson suggests you schedule your next session of Botox injections as soon as you notice the effects wearing off.

Repeat Botox causes the muscles under your skin to smooth out, which may prolong your treatment.
